Haiii,

I know it's been a while since I've done like an actual discussion thread on really anything relating to mugen or even ikemen in a sense since I mainly did all of that on ak1 so I decided I am going to start doing them again and decided to present you guys with one that's been on my mind lately and that is...

If IKEMEN:VOID was fully completed and stable and literally dropped tonight - what would still stop you from switching or matter of fact what would you like to see more of out of the fork that would make you wanna switch? like, pretend ikemen:void complete and is out tonight. it functions exactly as it should, meaning EVERY CHEAPIE from win to 1.X can run on it, you can use ANY SCREENPACK on it as well regardless of the version along with adding thousands upon thousands of characters can be stuffed unto it as well and it is fully stable you can go COMPLETELY nuts on it with no consequences.

What would still prevent you from switching?
ALSO, before anyone says anything this isn't really another “MUGEN vs IKEMEN” thread. I already did that one on ak1 and who knows I MIGHT bring it up again? since, I've noticed a lot of people been switching over but then again I wouldn't do it again in this discussion so If your whole comment is gonna be “IKEMEN has netplay” or “MUGEN has more chars,” you can save it, we have all heard that speech a hundred times tbh.

This also will not not a recap of the website. Beta 1.0 and Beta 2.0 are already out. the docs, the tier list, what supernulls/postmen actually do in 2.0, the VM warning, all of that is already written. I am not posting this so I can copy-paste the feature page into a forum thread.

The main question of the thread is that, would that become the install you open every day?

Or would you still keep 1.1b / WinMUGEN as the real one and treat VOID like a side program you only boot when you want to mess with cheapies?

That is the whole thread basically. and, the reason I am asking because ikemen:void seems to now be the talk of the town now, and what I mean by this is that, someone bought up this amazing project in the Mugen Database Discord. and, I of course had to come in and clarify things because yeah no way was I gonna let people just say whatever about the project when me, unbyte and scristopher been working our butts off on this project because all share the same vision and so do anyone else invested in this project.

And for anyone curious, to sum up that situation, on Aug 28 a guy named sondi posted the site and a folder dump. reaction was the usual bit: PlasmoidThunder called it deliberate holes / unsandboxed viruses, LC-DDM called it a malware-compliant engine you stare at, pringles piled on.

That read was sloppy af since WinMUGEN and 1.x already host cheapies and nulls. People have patched 1.0/1.1 for years so those chars would boot. and to add, the lib*.dll dump btw was the media/runtime stack, not a virus pack.

I posted that btw and Plasmoid walked it back said he was being facetious about cheapies coming preinstalled, not the DLLs. when the actual question landed: "why port IKEMEN with WinMUGEN-class holes unless you want cross-version cheapie support." IV/GO is not replacing WinMUGEN for that roster.

That’s the project. GO sanitizes at parse. void keeps the old path on an IKEMEN-class host and puts Life / roundstate / KO back on the engine (interceptor + UnsafeVM + Watchdog) so you don’t freeze on noKO / Double KO. Lab pack is just so we can see what boots.

Jenngra505 said it straight: cross-version cheapie support is why VOID exists. thread after that was “interesting / wasn’t paying attention, good to know.”

So: first time the name showed up outside our circle, the joke fired, the architecture question followed, and the answer is the same as the repo. Different job than GO. not a GO replacement. host for the roster GO refuses.

So ever since that happened I'm like well time to start a discussion on it since after all it is the only thing I am working on now. Collections, screenpacks, random roster dumps that chapter is done for now. Hopefully that makes sense since I know sometimes I can be all over the place.

So I need to know what “stable” even has to mean to people who are not me. If I guess, I will spend a year chasing a tier that five people care about and ignore the thing that would actually make someone delete their old mugen folder.

So if you would not switch, I need the real reason. not “nostalgia.” not “MUGEN is MUGEN.” those are not answers, those are vibes.
Reasons that actually count:

  1. My entire folder is 1.1b / WinMUGEN and I am not sitting here retesting 3k–15k chars to see what breaks
  2. Netplay / 4-player / replay / my current screenpack / my current lifebar setup is more important than cheapie compatibility
  3. The cheapies I actually use are still in the “not promised yet” pile
  4. I do not trust a fork that is not Elecbyte, period
  5. My PC is mid and if stable still has the Beta 2 tax (lag when a heavy char loads) I am not doing that daily
  6. I run this for Saltybet / watch mode / huge vs mode chaos and I need to know it does not choke
  7. I make chars, not collections, and I am not changing my workflow for a new engine unless authors are actually targeting it.

If you would switch, do not just comment “yes.” you gotta tell me what has to be in that first stable build or you bounce in a week. because idk man I feel like “it runs cheapies” is not enough if the select screen feels worse, your screenpack dies, or a 2k roster hitch-stutters every time a postman loads.

Now that I say that, let me say my own thoughts on this since after all this is my project after all and gotta say how I would think about switching..which is If imo this stable version of void dropped tonight and it did what I just described, VOID would be my daily engine obvi. for that is the whole point of the project one install instead of “this char only works in WinMUGEN, this pack is 1.1b, this cheapie needs a ritual.”

Like, considering I have ADHD, having everything in one place rather than switching consistently and such is a miracle and time saver. after all, I do collections and such and to have everything from all versions into one is endless and infinite fun for me and best part is I won't have to worry about crashes but then again, I know that it is not everybody. some of you just want a clean 80-char roster that netplays and some of you will never leave 1.1b no matter what I ship.

and, honestly that is fine, for I would rather hear that now than find out after I burn another year on no critique or 0 thoughts on the project that can be of actual help that fix and make it much better and such c:
