Many users have grown tired of the heavy moderation, random bans, inactive ownership, and the recent paid "featuring" system on AndersonKenya1. we respect the unlimited download model AK1 pioneered, but we believe it can be done better without the toxicity and paywalls.
Every week or two, we will highlight active and talented creators in our new Creator Spotlight forum. no payment required. just good work gets recognized.

Complete Beginner Guide • Last Updated: May 2026
MUGEN is a free 2D fighting game engine created in 1999. It allows anyone to create their own fighting games using characters, stages, music, and screenpacks made by the community.
Think of it like a sandbox where you can put Goku vs Naruto vs Spider-Man vs Kratos in one game.
Pros of MUGEN:
Huge amount of content available
Very customizable
Runs on almost any PC
Cons:
Older engine (can be unstable)
Graphics are usually pixel art style
Can be confusing for absolute beginners (luckily, this guide exsits)
Source / More Information: https://mugen.fandom.com/wiki/M.U.G.E.N
IKEMEN is the modern successor to MUGEN. It was built to fix many of the limitations of the original MUGEN engine while keeping the same core idea: letting anyone create 2D fighting games.
Pros of IKEMEN:
Much better performance and stability (less crashing)
Supports higher resolution and better graphics
Easier to add and edit characters/stages
More modern features (better zoom, hit detection, scaling, etc.)
Actively updated and still growing
Runs smoother on newer PCs
Cons:
Smaller selection of content compared to MUGEN (though it's growing fast)
Some older MUGEN characters need to be converted to work properly
Slightly steeper learning curve if you want to do advanced editing
Less "vintage" feel that some old-school fans prefer

In this guide, I'll tell you how to download each version of mugen (and explain their existence) for, mugen has the following versions that is used by everyone in the community: WinMugen, WinMugen Plus, Mugen 1.0, Mugen 1.1b
WinMUGEN (2002)
The very first public version. Extremely outdated, but it is a gem (a prime example of old is gold). Very limited features (but still has amazing characters made for it to this day). It's recommended if you want a pure nostalgia trip.
WinMUGEN Plus
Improved version of WinMUGEN with some bug fixes. Still very old and gold. Mostly used by people who like classic-style MUGEN in which I highly recommend.
MUGEN 1.0 (2009) (Most Stable Version)
Big official update. Better resolution support and more features. Many older characters were made for this version. Unfortunately, not as widely used.
MUGEN 1.1b (Most Popular)
Current most used and unstable version for it is a beta. Best compatibility with modern characters and screenpacks. Supports higher resolution and better performance. Recommended for most beginners (but you're OK to still check out the other version).
Step by step guide:
You can download WinMugen or WinMugen Plus here: https://gamebanana.com/mods/47687
Extract the zip file to any folder
Download characters, stages, and a screenpack
Put characters in the chars folder
Put stages in the stages folder
Run MUGEN.exe
You can download MUGEN 1.0 / 1.1b here: https://gamebanana.com/mods/47682
Extract the zip file to any folder → Put files in chars/stages folders → Run MUGEN.exe
Pro Tip: I usually recommend attempting to make your own collection first... Best collections here:

In this guide, I'll tell you how to download each version of ikemen (and explain their existence) for, ikemen has the following versions that is used by everyone in the community:
Main Build (IKEMEN GO)
IKEMEN Nightly
There's also 2 public modified versions of IKEMEN called:
V-IKEMEN &
IKEMEN PLUS ULTRA along with one that is W.I.P called
IKEMEN:VOID
(but it's up to you if you want to use those builds)
Main Build (Stable / Official Release)
The “safe” and tested version.
Fewer bugs and more stable performance.
Slightly behind on the newest features.
Best choice for absolute beginners who just want to play without issues.
Nightly Build (Development / Latest)
Updated very frequently (sometimes daily).
Contains the newest features, improvements, and bug fixes.
Can occasionally have small bugs or instability.
Recommended by most experienced creators because it has better compatibility and more modern tools.
Current Recommendation (2026):
Start with the Nightly Build if you want the best experience. Most people in the community use Nightly now.
Now, for the step by step guide:
The first time you run it, it will create the necessary folders (chars, stages, etc.).
Add content the same way as MUGEN:
Put characters in the chars folder
Put stages in the stages folder
Put screenpacks in the data folder (or follow the screenpack instructions)
Pro Tip: Many big collections and characters work better on the Nightly Build.
Adding Characters
Adding Stages
Extract the stage folder.
Copy the stage folder into your MUGEN folder → stages folder.
In select.def, add the stage under the [Stages] section.
Example: stages/MyStage/MyStage.def
Adding a Screenpack
Extract the screenpack.
Copy all files/folders into your main MUGEN folder (overwrite if asked).
Open data/system.def and make sure the screenpack is selected.
Run MUGEN — the new menu should appear.
Note: yes these tutorial does work for all versions of mugens.
Pro Tips for Both Engines:
Always read the readme.txt that comes with the download.
Some characters only work on specific versions (MUGEN 1.1 or IKEMEN Nightly).
If something crashes, try a different version (MUGEN 1.1 or IKEMEN Nightly).

You are now ready to walk into the realm of starter collections that is recommended by me and other experts for beginners. now this part, is interesting because people think that they have to jump straight into downloading these huge collections but it usually isn't recommended because it can be quite overwhelming.
This section is for people, who are ready to expand from their collection or don't really feel like starting their own collection. remember, don’t feel pressured to download huge collections right away! It’s completely okay (and often better) to start small so you don’t get overwhelmed!
Let's begin (I'll be providing 5):
Pro Tips:
Start small → Learn how to add characters properly → Then go bigger.
Big collections are awesome, but they can feel overwhelming when you’re new.
There’s no rush. Take your time and enjoy the process.
Now, that we've covered the basics, it's now time to explore into the tools aspect in regards of mugen and ikemen. that explores other parts of these engines, such as character editing, patches, tools, etc..
That being said here are the best tools and programs that most creators use. I'll separate them by purpose.
Fighter Factory Studio (Most Important)
The best and most popular character editor for both MUGEN and IKEMEN.
Allows you to edit sprites, animations, states, and more.
Highly recommended for anyone who wants to modify or create characters.
https://virtualltek.com/fighter-factory/
Notepad++
Free and excellent for editing .def, .st, .cmd, and other text files.
Much better than regular Notepad.
https://notepad-plus-plus.org/downloads/
7-Zip / Winrar
Best program for extracting .zip, .rar, and .7z files.
https://www.7-zip.org/
https://www.win-rar.com/
VSelect
Very useful tool to easily add characters to your roster without manually editing select.def.

Other Helpful Tools
SFF Decompiler / SFF Builder – For extracting or editing sprite files.
Air Editor – For editing animation files.
Palette Editor – For changing or creating color palettes.
GIMP or Paint.NET – Free image editors for making/editing sprites.

MUGEN has been around since 1999 - over 27 years. It’s one of the longest-running fan game communities ever. here’s a quick, honest overview so you and your homies know what you're stepping into.
Quick History
1999–2003: Created by a small team called Elecbyte. Started as a DOS program.
2003: Elecbyte disappeared, but a leaked WinMUGEN version spread. This is when the community exploded.
2009–2011: Elecbyte briefly returned and released MUGEN 1.0/1.1.
2010s–2026: The community grew massively but also became fragmented. Many big sites rose and fell due to drama.
Major Dramas & Problems Over the Years
Character Theft — Very common in the early days. People would steal and re-upload others’ work without credit.
Paywalling / Selling Content — Some creators started charging money for characters (against the original spirit).
Gatekeeping / Privateering - Some groups create private Discords or closed communities where they hoard rare characters, stages, and screenpacks and refuse to share them publicly.
Toxic Staff / Power Trips — 2 big sites became known for abusive moderation and favoritism.
Notable Examples of Toxic Staff / Power Trips:
Mugen Archive - Frequently criticized for heavy-handed moderation, inconsistent rules, and staff acting with too much power. Playlist
AndersonKenya1 (AK1) - Became infamous in 2025–2026 for toxic administration, mass demotions/bans, and heavy drama involving staff (especially the admin known as Powpink). Multiple exposé videos were made about the situation. Playlist
Other Common Issues: Gatekeeping, Drama & Feuds, etc.
Now that's been said.. I understand after reading this you may feel discouraged... but to navigate the community it's really simple.
Don’t steal - Always credit the original creator.
Be wary of toxic discords...
Avoid random .exe files...
Avoid websites such as Mugen Archive and Andersonkenyak1 for your mental health...
