According to OP:
The previous nightlies had this behavior by default, but now, after Analog became its own trigger, you can have it back in the form of this module! This allows you to use the analog sticks for directions in-game the way it did in previous nightlies.

Installation: save this in your data folder as adc.zss, then add data/adc.zss to your States section in config.ini AFTER data/functions.zss but BEFORE the other definitions!
