A long time after releasing DeMille, I've began thinking about making another character from Tomato Adventure for Mugen. I decided to make the character that is basically the Fragile Speedster of the game, and that is Relek! Obviously, he has lower defence in comparison to a regular character, meaning he can be K.O.'d earlier, but he has high speed, both when attacking and running. Obviously, his moveset is based on his gimmicks from the game, while some original ones also make an appearance.

1. WHO IS RELEK?

Relek is one of the protagonists of the 2002 video game Tomato Adventure. A 9-year-old mole, he is talkative and sarcastic kid, and supplies Relek and his party with information on how to defeat the Super Kids, as well as giving them Spy Data he collected to show what King Abira is currently up to. He is also the journalist of the Daily Mole, dubbed "Special Correspondent 007", and used Relek's party to get great scoops for the newspaper. After the reveal of him being a journalist, he becomes the last party member to join.

 *[ADD] Extra palette that is normally unused.
 *[NERF] Ground knockback for aerial normals was increased in an attempt to remove infinites via shorthopping. 
 *[CHANGE] If holding backwards, Relek's throw will make him turn around.

 *[FIX] Throw could be performed while airborne, resulting in Relek standing in mid-air.

 *[FIX] When an an air dash's direction was changed, Relek would go to a wrong direction when the air dash's animation ended.

 *[BUFF] A.I. now makes use of hypers much more.

-v1.6 (August 14, 2025)
 *[ADD] "DANGER!" message.
 *[ADD] Finisher. Needs 300 HP or less and 3000 power to be used.
 *[ADD] Aerial drift; now Relek can move when airborne, giving him more air control!
 *[CHANGE] Relek's 6-button layout has been brought back to be consistent with Relek's returned button layout.
 *[CHANGE] A couple of specials and hypers' inputs were reverted to the ones before v1.5.
 *[BUFF] A.I, with more zoning.
 *[ADD] Relek now can perform shorter jumps.
 *[CHANGE] Hyper portrait.
 *[BUFF] Relek's comboability has been expanded; he can now chain certain specials into other specials for more combos!
 *[CHANGE] Pausetime for stronger normals and specials.
 *[BUFF] When Relek fully jumps out of Air Dive, he can now cancel it into any of his airborne normals.
 *[CHANGE] Mole Rush now makes the three small Releks appear properly.
 *[CHANGE] Relek now cannot be pushed during Seed Bomb until he slams the thingy (IDK what is it, maybe a balloon?).

-v1.5 (February 21, 2025)
 *[CHANGE] Revamped gameplay and combo system - Relek now only uses three buttons for normals, though there's a catch - you can now chain a light normal into another light normal into ANOTHER light normal, which can be also chained into a medium normal into a medium normal and then a strong normal, though this only applies to standing normals. However, you can now chain a strong normal into a crouching normal for comboing as doing so will move Relek forward a little.
 *[CHANGE] Dodges, Air Dive power charge and the throw now use their unique buttons, using A for dodges and Air Dive, B for the power charge, and C for the throw.
 *[CHANGE] Couple of specials and hypers' inputs to be consistent with the three-button setup for normals.

-v1.4 (February 15, 2025)
 *[FIX] Hitting the hedgehog from Firehog will cause a clone of Relek to appear.
 *[CHANGE] A.I. in some ways.

 *[REMOVE] Low parrying, due to certain issues with two of my other characters, and to be consistent with them. This will be also done for my other characters that will receive parrying.

 *[FIX] Below Scratch's tracking property in single matches caused a debug error.
 *[BUFF] EX ShuriGun's earlier hits now have more hitstun, while the animation was made a frame shorter, allowing the combo counter to count up correctly when the shurikens hit the opponent.
 *[FIX] Only the first shuriken played the correct hitspark on hit from EX ShuriGun.
 *[ADD] Firehog now plays a smoke animation after the projectile charges forward, making use of a previously unused sprite.
 *[FIX/NERF] Charge Kick had an infinite. As a result, the attack animation's endlag has been increased.
 *[BUFF] Below Scratch is now an OTG (only the regular attack; startup's hitbox is not an OTG).
 *[IMPROVE] Shading on the victory portrait.

3. GAMEPLAY

-MAIN GAMEPLAY-
Relek is a character that focuses mainly on zoning, having two projectiles where he can use to stay away from the opponent and annoy them from a distance with a special that fires three projectiles, as well as a special that is both a melee attack and a projectile. Besides that, Relek can also approach the opponent either from a distance, or via a special that tracks the opponent's position.

-COMBOS-
Relek's combo system is based on MvC, where he can cancel weaker normals into stronger ones, and can perform aerial raves. He can also cancel some specials into hypers. Due to how short the hitstun is, you need to be slightly faster in order to perform the combos, so his combos are something not for those whose fingers aren't that fast.

-MECHANICS-
Relek has a few mechanics to go through. One of them is a dodge, performed by pressing X+A, which makes Relek dodge any attack that is not attributed as a throw (which WILL hit him!). Another one is a power charge, performed with Y+B. Doing this will cause Relek to gain power if the buttons are held, which will give him faster access to EX specials and hypers, though this comes at a cost of not allowing him to move, so make sure you don't abuse it too much. The third one is parrying, performed when you walk forward just before the opponent's attack makes contact, and this mechanic has an airborne version. When performed, Relek negates all damage the opponent's attack would do to him, while providing small invincibility to not be hit while parrying. Another one is an air dash, performed by pressing forward twice to do a forward one and vice versa. This does not give him any unique properties, but allows him to cancel it into any of his normals, while giving him more air control. He also has a super jump, performed by pressing down and then up. This is mainly used as a combo tool, though he can also use it to approach if the opponent is too high for him to reach with his regular jumps.

-MOVELIST-
SPECIALS:

ShuriGun: D, DF, F, X/Y/Z
- Relek pulls a gun that fires three shurikens. Great zoning tool. Causes soft knockdown for airborne opponents.
 - EX version: Fires three more shurikens.

Seed Bomb: D, DF, F, A/B/C
- Relek hits a watermelon-like thingy that shoots a seed, growing a small plant that grows several exploding watermelons. This attack is a combination of a melee attack and a projectile; the slam causes hard knockdown, while the watermelons from the plant explode after a short while. Seed velocity varies depending on the button pressed.
 - EX version: Slam causes a wall bounce, while the thingy shoots two seeds.

Below Scratch: D, DB, B, X/Y/Z
- Relek goes into the ground, before popping out, scratching the opponent up. Good combo tool and causes soft knockdown.
 - EX version: Causes hard knockdown.

Charge Kick: D, DB, B, A/B/C
- Relek charges forward onto the opponent, kicking them and causing a wall bounce. Good combo tool.
 - EX version: Relek charges faster, attack causes more knockback.
  - This is also used for the Guard Cancel, performed by pressing Z+C during blockstun at the cost of 1000 power.

HYPERS:

Firehog: D, DF, F, D, DF, F, X+Y/Y+Z/X+Z (uses 1000 power)
- Relek ignites a hedgehog that charges onto the opponent. Great zoning tool and has great knockback.

Yokozuna: D, DF, F, D, DF, F, A+B/B+C/A+C (uses 1000 power)
- Relek inflates a balloon-like thingy, which hits the opponent thrice from anywhere on screen. The last hit causes hard knockdown.

ShuriAutomatic: D, DB, B, D, DB, B, X+Y/Y+Z/X+Z (uses 2000 power)
- A stronger version of ShuriGun where Relek shoots more shurikens. Causes hard knockdown on every hit.

Mole Rush: D, DB, B, D, DB, B, A+B/B+C/A+C (uses 3000 power)
- Relek splits himself into three small Releks as they slash the screen four times. Any unlucky opponent that failed to block the attack will be launched up when Relek goes back to normal.

-ULTIMATE- 
The ultimate is an unblockable move that is performed by crouching thrice and pressing X+Y+Z. The move covers the entire screen, dealing almost enough damage to K.O. the opponent if at full HP, and can only be performed after  the "DANGER!" message appears, while giving them full invincibility during its duration. 

Relek's ultimate - Giant Egg:
Relek looks up, and then goes into a hole, followed by a giant egg falling down and squashing the opponents. Once the egg disappears, Relek will return onto the stage.

4. PALETTES
Relek has a total of 12 palettes, all of which can be selected if you press a different button when you're at the character select screen. Note that palettes 7-12 can only be selected if you hold start (which is used for the taunt). However, Relek comes with a palette selector, which allows the player to select any of the 12 palettes, which can be helpful if they change their mind before the match can start. Below are the palettes:

A: Relek (Default)
B: DeMille
C: Alesa
X: Sofubi
Y: Selemo
Z: Pasaran
Start+A: Phantom Thief Berri
Start+B: King Abira
Start+C: Abiwrath
Start+X: Brikky and Grikky
Start+Y: Tomatrio
Start+Z: Luigi (fun fact: this palette is a reference to the fact that both the (originally) Mario & Luigi series and Tomato Adventure were developed by AlphaDream. :D)

-EXTRA PALETTE-
The extra palette is an additional palette that is normally unused. It is present in case you'd wanna use it for one reason or another.

5. NOTES

-THINGS YOU CAN DO WITH HIM-
 1. Make a match with him.
 2. Share it with your friends/fans in case you would want them to gain a potential interest in Tomato Adenture.
 3. Give him an A.I. patch if you want his A.I. to be stronger. No permission needed, though credit will be still appreciated. :)
 4. Create additional palettes for him, in case you would want more variety or have your own palettes.
 5. Send me feedback if there are any oddities, oopsies, or bugs, especially that can affect his gameplay.

-THINGS YOU CANNOT DO WITH HIM-
 1. Make NSFW/18+ edits (this includes vore edits. I mean he's a kid for crying out loud!).
 2. Bash him (it's a waste of time. There are better ways of using your time rather than bashing. This isn't the 2010s anymore anyways).
 3. Make spriteswaps or paletteswaps of him, because doing them is laziness and is disrespectful.
 4. Giving deconstructive feedback (such as "Your char sucks lol, learn how to make chars dork", or "Lol you can't make chars properly, you're a loser"), as it sounds more like insulting not just the character, but me.

-THINGS THAT REQUIRE PERMISSION-
 1. As I tend to have trust issues with some Mugen content creators, editing him requires permission from me. Note that what can be edited are combos, gameplay, and other stuff, but absolutely no NSFW/18+ edits as mentioned earlier.
 2. Using codes from the character if you're creating a Mugen character yourself. It's better to learn how to code instead of steal, so if you would want to use some of his code, ask me first.
 3. Use of sprites in a different project.

-KNOWN ISSUES-
 1. The A.I. code is not perfect, but I tried.

-OTHER NOTES-
 1. This character was made only for Mugen 1.0 and up. Older versions of Mugen will not load the character.
 2. Tested on Mugen 1.1, but still works on Mugen 1.0.

6. INSTALLATION

Struggling with adding Relek to your roster? No worries, here's how to do it:

1. Unpack the character's folder and add it in the chars folder
2. Go to data and open select
3. Paste the following name in the character section: Relek

And here you go! Relek should now appear anytime you start Mugen.
